The five federal service academies offer a fully funded college education in exchange for a commitment to serve as a military officer. They are among the most selective institutions in the country.

The nation's oldest service academy, West Point produces Army officers through a rigorous 47-month program combining academic, military, and physical development. Known for producing some of America's most distinguished military and civilian leaders.
Academics

- Apply for your congressional nomination by spring of junior year in high school
- Contact both senators and your representative. Each has 5 nominations to give
- The Presidential nomination (for children of career military) is separate from congressional
- Athletic participation is highly valued: 70%+ of cadets were varsity athletes
- Your Candidate Fitness Assessment score is weighted heavily

Junior Year (Spring)Each of your two senators and one representative can nominate up to 5 candidates per academy per year. Some have competitive processes, some have interviews, some go by merit alone.
Begin academy application and congressional nomination applications simultaneously
Junior Year (Summer)Most congressional offices open nominations in the spring/summer of your junior year. Academy applications open around the same time (October-November for the following year). Do not wait.
Complete congressional nomination applications — interviews may be required
Junior Year (Fall)Some offices hold formal nomination boards with interviews. Others submit letters. Treat every part of the process professionally.
Academy application deadline — most academies December 31
Senior Year (Fall)Submit your complete application package: transcripts, test scores, physical fitness assessment, medical screening (DoDMERB), and recommendations.
Nominations submitted; academy appointment offers issued
Senior Year (Winter/Spring)Appointments are offered on a rolling basis. If you receive a nomination but not an appointment, you may be waitlisted or offered prep school (NAPS/USMAPS).

Each academy runs a preparatory school for candidates who were nominated but not selected, or who need to strengthen their academic or physical readiness:

- AFAPSAir Force Academy Preparatory School — Colorado Springs, CO
- CGPCCoast Guard Academy Preparatory School — New London, CT
Prep school is a one-year program that feeds directly into the academy the following year. It's not a consolation prize — many prep school grads go on to excel at and beyond the academy. If offered a prep school slot, take it seriously.
