Age Limit
Must be able to commission before 31st birthday
Commitment
4 years active duty as an officer (post-commission)
Graduates As
2LT in the U.S. Army
Green to Gold is the U.S. Army's flagship program for active-duty enlisted soldiers who want to earn a bachelor's degree and commission as Army officers. Soldiers leave active duty, attend a college with an Army ROTC program, and commission upon graduation — all while receiving full pay, allowances, and benefits during their studies.
Program Tracks
Active Duty Option (ADO)
Soldier remains on active duty status (with full pay and benefits) while attending college. Assigned to a local ROTC battalion. Must be within 2 years of degree completion. This is the most common Green to Gold track.
Scholarship Option
Soldier separates from active duty and enrolls in an ROTC program as a civilian. Receives the ROTC scholarship (tuition/fees + stipend) in exchange for the commissioning commitment. Suitable for soldiers who need more than 2 years to complete a degree.
Non-Scholarship Option
Soldier separates from active duty and enrolls in an ROTC program without scholarship assistance. Less common — used when scholarship quotas are exhausted or soldier does not qualify.

Pro Tips for Green to Gold (Army)
- Apply during your junior NCO years (E-4 through E-6) to maximize your timeline before age cutoff
- The ADO track is better financially — you keep your full pay while in school
- Find a college with an ROTC battalion near a base where you can complete the ADO track
- Your Army experience is a significant advantage in ROTC — you already know military culture
- Military experience often lets you test out of MS1/MS2 ROTC courses, accelerating your path
- Reach out to your gaining ROTC PMS (Professor of Military Science) early to build a relationship before your selection board
- Green to Gold selection boards meet twice annually — miss one and you wait 6 months
Life After Commissioning
After commissioning, Green to Gold officers typically branch into the same pool as ROTC graduates. Prior enlisted experience is a genuine advantage as a Platoon Leader — your NCOs will respect that you've been in their shoes. Many Green to Gold officers are among the best platoon leaders in the Army.
